Meet across the street from the parking lot.  Take a walk in the woods to see how trees are tapped in the sugarbush at Strawberry Hill!  Naturalists will teach hikers about tree tapping history, and how to identify maples in winter.  The trail passes through woodlands and wetlands and is rocky, mostly flat, but includes one moderately steep uphill section.  This hike takes approximately 1 hour.  Wear good walking/hiking shoes and bring a bottle of water!  Hikes are held rain or shine (except for severe weather).  Pre-registration is not required.  Call (717) 337-4137 or visit Healthy Adams County’s Facebook page for more details including cancellation information.  Free.

The Mindfulness and Stress Reduction courses continue to be presented as a workshop series in 2020.  The three workshops build on each other, so all three are suggested, but they are also designed so that each one can offer value if taken alone.  This free program is funded by Gettysburg Hospital Foundation and facilitated by Julie Falk, Ph.D.

Registration is required.  Please call 717-337-4137 or email jgastley2@wellspan.org to register or for more information.

Physical Fitness Task Force’s Winter Fitness Hiking

Date:  Sunday, March 29, 2020                     Time:  1:45 p.m.

Location:  Indian Lookout, St. Mary’s Cemetery, Emmitsburg, MD – 2.5 mile hike

Join Healthy Adams County’s Physical Fitness Task Force for a free guided winter hike.  Hikes are open to everyone.

Take U.S. 15 south, past Mount St. Mary’s College and make a right turn on Motter Road, a quick left on St. Anthony’s Road and right on Grotto Road.  Follow it to the parking lot for the Grotto and cemetery.  This is a more challenging hike due to some steep hills at the start and also fairly rocky terrain.  The first 0.2 miles are the steepest, if this is too much for you, the approximately one mile walk through the Grotto is very lovely.  The trail levels off after the first 0.5 mile and offers a great view of Gettysburg at the turnaround point (Indian Lookout).  Hiking boots and a bottle of water are recommended.  A walking stick and/or binoculars might be handy.  Due to parking issues, please do not arrive before 1:15, this hike starts at 1:45.  This hike will be led by Mount St. Mary alumnus and Adams County Commissioner Marty Qually.  We are trying to get a group to go to Chubby’s BBQ in Emmitsburg after the hike.  Please indicate your interest in attending an “after meal” on Facebook.   Hikes are held rain or shine (except for severe weather).  Pre-registration is not required.  Call (717) 337-4137 or visit Healthy Adams County’s Facebook page for more details including cancellation information.  Free.
